OUR STORY

Lorna & Jim Bulwan
Owners and farmers of La Plata Lavender
Rooted in a long heritage of farming and ranching in the La Plata Mountain region, our family
has always worked to make the land fruitful. At La Plata Lavender, our mission continues that
tradition with a clear purpose: to glorify God in everything we do. Our faith, craftsmanship, and
connection to the land guide each decision we make.
We began in the fall of 2018 with a test plot of 40 lavender plants. The first year was a season of
discovery. Could lavender thrive in Southwestern Colorado enduring the cold, wind, and
drought? The learning curve was steep! Today, the farm is home to over 1,000 lavender plants,
representing more than 16 cultivars—including both English lavenders (Lavandula angustifolia)
and lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia) varieties. Each cultivar offers its own signature scent,
bloom color, and stem length, making it uniquely suited for different uses.
We create 18 hand-crafted products that span bath and body, household, and decorative
categories—each made on the farm with love and care. From the moment a plant awakens in
spring to the final sealing of a finished product, our process is completely hands-on. We closely
monitor moisture, wildlife, and wind, and carefully evaluate plant health each season.
La Plata Lavender is primarily a family effort, lovingly managed by Lorna and Jim, with
valuable contributions from their children—and soon, the grandchildren! Lorna brings a deep
respect for the land, a love of gardening, and a professional background in psychology and
behavior therapy. Lavender has been a perfect outlet for her passion for beauty, nature, and
healing.
Community is at the heart of what we do. We treasure the conversations and relationships we
build at local farmer’s markets and during our annual U Pick community gathering—the first
Saturday after the 4th of July—when visitors can stroll through blooming fields. Our products
are proudly available at several local retailers, including Dietz Market, Bayfield Pharmacy,
James Ranch Market, Meadow Market, and Adela Flora.
We also welcome tours by appointment and have partnered with Long Table Farm and Leaning
Tree Farms to host unforgettable farm-to-table dinners on our property.
What makes La Plata Lavender special? Everything we grow and create is done with love, care,
and a deep appreciation for the gifts God has given us. We hope that when you experience our
lavender, you feel peace, joy, and connection to the beauty of creation.
